Saturday in Guangzhou

Today was a free day...no paper work to be done, so we hit the streets but not without breakfast. Max loves to eat. I think his favorite is breakfast, he eats, and eats, and eats. He loves to cut all his food up, then mix it together. Yuck! Someone told me that was a culture thing, I don't know? He must use a knife a lot, because he cuts his food perfectly.

After he is done he cleans his plate and silverware with a napkin. I wonder if he did that in the orphanage?

This mixture is not so bad, but some of his mixtures are awful!

Max always wants me to hold him when we first get out and I love it!!!
Just look at that smile he has!!!

We took in tons of culture today. We walked through the market. We saw all kinds of strange things.

There were tons of dogs for sale. I'm not sure if they were pets or .....

This little girl was sweeping the street outside her mama's store.

Dried seahorses

Dried frogs

Ba Ba gave Max lemon heads for the first time....he loved them and wanted to share with everyone :)

It has been so hot here, but today it was cold. We had Max in a pair of shorts and a short sleeve shirt. We were getting some strange looks. One lady told Michelle that she didn't have enough clothes on her baby, so I guess that is why we were getting the looks....not enough clothes. Max was getting cold so we stopped for some pants and a jacket. Gramma Linda would have gone crazy in this store, they had Ralph Lauren everywhere, and it was dirt cheap!!!

Max got upset and cried for the first time today. He was acting up a little in one of the shops and wouldn't listen to me. One of the ladies there started saying something to him, then he got really quiet. I picked him up to carry him out. The lady in the store said I should put him down, he is big enough to walk. She then started saying something else to him. She told me to let him walk it will make him be a good man.?. I told her that is ok. (We want to hold him, its bonding time.) When we all got out of the store, he started crying. We were heartbroken to hear him cry like that. I don't know, but I think whatever that lady said it made him worry about his new mama and baba. We started trying to console him, but he wouldn't look at us. I just kept saying mama and baba loves you in Chinese. He finally got back to his chipper self, but I think that wiped him out, he fell fast asleep after that.

We bought him some chops today. These are not chopsticks, it is a stamp with his Chinese and American name on it...so neat!
They are hand made. He loved watching the man do the carving them. We finally had to move him, he was getting to close. He takes everything in!!

We went to a delicious deli. Max got cheese bread, size XL.

We saw a group of school kids. Their teacher wanted them to practice their English on us. They were so cute, they asked us for our autographs. Max sat just watching for a long time, then he got up and started talking to them. I think he was trying to give this little boy his toy airplane. It was fun watching them interact.

Curious Max.

Max found a coin on the ground...you would have thought he found a treasure. He got so excited.

He loved riding on my back. I am buying one of these when we get home. I loved it...thanks Michelle! Here is one wiped out little boy...he fell asleep on the way home at 5:30 and is still sleeping at 7:11.

Looks like a fun filled day. I bet you are loving all that shopping...for good deals! It makes me wonder what that lady in the shop said to him. That is sad.
Loved the back pack thing. I can't believe he only weighs 33 pounds he is little. How tall is he?
He is too precious. I love reading all about this wonderful journey. I am so glad you are taking the time to post!

That just goes to show you the culture differences. No one in America would be so rude as to scold someone elses little boy! I hope Max forgets whatever that lady told him!

What a fun day. I hate that that lady upset Max. That makes me a little mad. If you want to hold and carry him...it is your decision. I don't like it when other people tell you how to be a parent. Ugh! You have great parenting skills and instincts. Don't let anyone worry you. Have fun!

I just read both posts and kept saying out loud Us too! Us too! So, here are my "Us too"s...
1. Finley was almost turning two and we got scolded if we carried her anywhere. As a matter of fact, they didn't even want us to hold her hand - even on a busy street!! Can you imagine? I finally just started ignoring them and doing it my way.

2. One of John's caregivers said something to him very similar (bad reaction) right before she said her final goodbyes - they kept warning us that he was "fractious" and mean to the other kids. At 3.5! I just could have spit, I was so mad. I can only imagine how much he was told that he was mean or bad. Makes me mad even two years later.

3. John = 31 lbs = 5.5 years old. Get ya some adjustable waist jeans asap!!!

4. Videotape the song as soon as you can, if you haven't. John would sing to us in Russia, but the minute we got home he got very embarrassed of speaking Russian and wouldn't do it again. I could just cry that I didn't think to get it on tape.

5. Someone once told me that at some point, I would actually forget which of my kids were bio and which were adopted. I really, kind of, did not believe her. Then I adopted. I feel just the same - exactly the same - as I did with my bio child. And sometimes, I find myself telling John that he has my dad's hands or Finley that she is just like her aunt Karen...and THEN I remember that these things are not bio possible...but they are still true. God knows that he was meant to be in your family. We are all just blessed that we get to read about your adventure on your blog. The highlight of my day, I tell ya!

heather, when you look back on your blog you are going to love tht you captured these little moments! I loved the pics of max with you and with michael. they are so touching. I liked how you documented his little orphanage habits, the cleaning of the plate and utensils, amazing to be so young but has asked to be so big, in other ways. Mixing of his food. that may change as he lives in the states and becomes part of your family. It may not but you have these early memories. He is going to love it too!

I have loved reading your blog! It is so neat. That lady in the store should have kept her nose in her own business! They must not cuddle their children much or maybe she didn't have any kids. Who knows. That was sad. Anyway, he is a handsome little fellow!
